Waveless Waterbed Mattress
Choose Between Baffled, Fibre Filled Or Cylinder Mattress

The waveless waterbed mattress is a proof of how far the waterbed technology has come in the past few years.

In fact since the waterbed's heyday in the sixties and seventies, the original free flow waterbed mattress design has been improved upon in a variety of different ways to increase comfort and support while reducing motion transfer between partners.

The old-fashioned free flow waterbed mattress is known for creating a tidal wave of motion across the entire mattress with each movement that a person makes.

This can cause continuous disturbance for other sleepers, which means that a restless sleeper will be constantly waking his or her partner by moving during the night. For some people the wave motion can even cause nausea, similar to seasickness.

A waveless waterbed mattress is made by several different methods. It may have a series of fibre layers, baffles or water compartments that minimize movement to stop the chain reaction of waves caused by movement.

Modern soft side waterbed mattresses have no bulky wooden frame to support the bladder, just a foam shell that looks exactly like a regular innerspring mattress.

Softside waterbed mattresses employ several different methods of using water as a comfort material, including dual bladders, shallow fill designs and individual cylinders. Some soft side models also take the same type of bladder as a wooden frame bed.

Baffled Waveless Waterbed Mattress

One method of reducing the amount of wave motion in a waterbed mattress is by adding baffles to the inside of the bag.

Most baffled designs have a series of chambers that resemble a honeycomb, which helps to reduce the movement of the water within the mattress. The number of baffles in a waterbed mattress determines the amount of wave resistance it has.

Pros:
  • Works just like a traditional style waterbed mattress, but with fewer waves
  • Fits in any wood frame or soft side mattress
  • Choose from semi-waveless to fully waveless

Cons:
  • Fully waveless ones have more motion than waveless fibre filled mattresses; not as suitable for people who want to completely eliminate waves

Fibre Filled Waveless Waterbed Mattres

By adding one or more layers of fibre to the inside of a waterbed mattress, it is easy for waveless waterbed mattress manufacturers to control the amount of motion a waterbed mattress will produce.

Just one sheet will reduce the waves somewhat while still allowing some motion. Numerous layers will reduce the motion even further; the more layers the mattress contains, the more stable it will be. These fibre layers can also make a waveless waterbed mattress firmer or softer, depending on the amount of fibre that is used.

Pros:
  • Fits in any wood frame or soft side mattress
  • Can be semi waveless or completely waveless; the fully waveless ones are truly waveless
  • Can choose your level of firmness with this type of mattress

Cons:
  • Feels less like an old-fashioned waterbed, for those who prefer some waves

Cylinder Style Waveless Waterbed Mattress

The cylinder or tube style waveless waterbed mattress is one of the types of mattresses used in modern soft side waterbeds. These cylinders can be removed from the mattress individually and filled in a sink without any additional equipment.

If this type of waterbed develops a leak, simply remove the damaged cylinder and replace it. The bed remains usable even with a missing cylinder.

Waveless cylinders are filled with fiber to give them motion-reducing stability, and the individual nature of the cylinders means that there is no motion transfer whatsoever from one partner to another. This type of waveless waterbed mattress is lightweight and much more easy to manage than a conventional waterbed mattress.

Pros:
  • Easy to fill; no hoses or special equipment required
  • Customize your level of firmness by the amount of water you add
  • Possible to mix waveless with non-waveless for just the right amount of motion
  • Minimal loss of water in the event of a leak

Cons:
  • Not designed for use in a wood frame without the soft side shell

No matter what style or size of waterbed you have, it is possible to replace your free flow bladder with a waveless waterbed mattress if you want to reduce movement. A waveless mattress will accomplish this without compromising the comfort provided by a waterbed.
