The Difference Between Mattress Toppers, Pads & Covers
The latest trend in comfortable sleeping are the use of mattress toppers, pads and covers but do you really know the difference?
It can be a bit confusing as to what each is and the advantages and disadvantages of one over the other. So let's see what the differences are...
Mattress toppers, pads and covers are all used with your existing mattress. They are used to add comfort, protect the mattress and help the sleeper cope with allergies.
The terms are often used interchangeably which can be confusing. Each is an additional layer you can to your bed.
What's A Mattress Topper?A mattress topper is used to add an extra layer of comfort to an existing mattress. If your mattress is too hard, a mattress topper can greatly improve your comfort level.
Pillow top mattresses are made with toppers attached to the mattress itself. But they can be purchased separately and can be made of foam or other synthetic materials.
If you are interested in combating dust mites and mold, mattress toppers made of natural latex will give you what you need. They are a little more expensive but worth the money in comfort.
What's A Mattress Pad?Mattress pads typically are used to cover and protect the mattress. They are often made out of cotton and can be washed and changed with your sheets.
They are also available made from latex and synthetic materials like the toppers. They have the advantage of being hypo allergenic as well. Lambs wool mattress pads have all the properties of wool. They absorb moisture and are extremely soft which is why they are often used for people who are bed ridden.
Mattress pads often have an extra layer of padding on the top. They do not add as much to the comfort level as a mattress topper bit are sometimes all you need.
The latex and synthetic mattress pads are the longest lasting and are the easiest to care for. They are also very comfortable and can last up to 20 years so they are worth the extra cost.
Memory foam is a popular option in both mattress pads and toppers. It has its advantages and disadvantages. They tend to not breathe very well and some people find them uncomfortable because they are hot. Some of less expensive varieties also have an odor and eventually lose their ability to spring back.
Down is also a popular choice in bedding pads. Some people are very allergic to down and therefore this would not be a good option for them.
A wool mattress pad is great for a person with allergies and will help you stay a comfortable temperature when added to a synthetic foam topper. Wool lined mattress pads draw the moisture away from the body and inhibit the growth of molds.
What's A Mattress Cover?A mattress cover simply protects the mattress. Covers are thin and without added padding like a mattress pad or topper. A mattress cover can be purchased that encases a mattress completely like a pillowcase and zipping at one end.
These are ideal for the allergy prone as it eliminates dust mite problems. Most all of these options are available in hypoallergenic versions.
The terms "mattress covers" and "mattress pads are often used interchangeably so if you do some searches online for mattress pads you might come across covers and vice versa.
