King Size Waterbed Mattress
Pros And Cons Of Different King Size Waterbeds

A king size waterbed mattress comes in two different sizes: the Standard or Eastern king, and the California king.

Each type of king waterbed mattress is a distinct size, so you must be sure that your bedding matches the type of the waterbed mattress that you have.

The Standard king offers nearly as much space as two twin beds placed side by side.

It is nearly a perfect square, with its measurements of 78"x80", and it is the king size mattress frequently used in soft side waterbeds and conventional mattresses.

Generally, bedding that is simply marked 'king size' is designed to fit this type of king mattress. The California king is slightly longer and narrower than the standard king, with measurements of 72"x84", which makes it the ideal king size waterbed mattress for people over six feet tall.

The additional length is especially important for comfort in hard side waterbeds, because hanging feet over the edge of a wooden frame can be extremely uncomfortable, even with bumper pads.

The slightly narrower width makes this bed a better fit for some smaller bedrooms as well. The California king gets its name from the state where waterbeds were originally invented and made popular.

Wood frame waterbeds like the ones made popular in the sixties and seventies are considerably less expensive than modern soft side waterbeds. A frame can cost as little as a few hundred dollars, depending on the design.

A king size waterbed mattress will vary in price, depending on the type of king waterbed mattress that you select. Free flow waterbed mattresses are generally less expensive than waveless or semi-waveless ones.

Your waterbed frame should come with a liner that works as a safeguard to catch water in the event of a leak to help prevent it from damaging carpets and other furnishings.

Soft side waterbeds have a foam shell in which the bladder is placed, and then a topper is attached, usually by way of a zipper to completely encase the bladder. Some soft side waterbeds use a series of individual water cylinders that can be filled separately then placed into the bed.

One advantage to this type of bed is that a leak will only empty one cylinder instead of the bed. Imagine a king size waterbed mattress with a leak that empties the entire mattress all over the bedroom floor!

Cylinder style waterbeds are also much more lightweight than a full bladder mattress, which makes them more appropriate for apartments and upstairs rooms.

Pros:
  • King size waterbed mattresses are the largest waterbed mattresses available
  • Comfort and support with a tranquil floating feeling
  • Adjustable temperature control
  • Available in two sizes

Cons:
  • A king waterbed mattress costs more to heat than a smaller model
  • Not suitable for small bedrooms
  • Considerable weight and water volume - may not be permitted in some apartment buildings
  • Difficult to move
  • Needs specialized bedding
