Just like the buying process, the process of cleaning a memory foam mattress can be quite challenging.
Whether you are planning to buy a memory foam mattress or whether you have already bought one; once in a while you will need to clean your mattress.
The need to clean the memory foam mattress will arise if it gets coffee stains, urine stains, or any fluid stains.
Normally, a memory foam mattress doesn’t require cleaning but in special cases, you might need to wash them.
If you have small children at home then you will be faced with the problem of urine stains. This can even happen if you have any kind of pet (dogs or cats) at home.
Stains can also form due to other reasons like spilling of food, coffee spills, juice spills, watercolor spills etc. One of the important things to remember is that all types of regular stains are removable but you have to take extreme care of your mattress.
Cleaning a memory foam mattress can be time consuming. Some of the utility items that you will need to assist in the cleaning process include a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush, a bottle of liquid fabric cleaner, plastic sheet, baking soda, sponge, plastic gloves, soft cloth, and hydrogen peroxide.
Cleaning memory foam mattresses at regular intervals will shorten its life span. Hence you need to be very careful in protecting the mattress from stains.
Another important aspect that you need to consider is the warranty. Some of the top manufacturers offer cleaning stains in their warranty.
So check the warranty – if it has not expired then the professionals hired by the manufacturer will clean the memory foam mattress for you. That will save you a lot of time and inconvenience.
How To Clean A Memory Foam Mattress
Here is a step-by-step process of the cleaning process:
Step#1
Before you start the process of cleaning a memory foam mattress, you will need to take your mattress to a place where there is a water tap or water socket nearby. If there is no water tap near the place of washing then try getting a hose.
Step#2
Now you need to remove the mattress cover. Depending on the size of the mattress, you can place it in a bathtub or on a plastic sheet.
Step#3
Get a spray bottle and fill one third of the bottle with liquid fabric cleaner and the rest with water. Shake the bottle vigorously so that the liquid fabric cleaner mixes well with water. The better the mixture, the easier it will be to clean your memory foam mattress.
Step#4
Spray the mixture on the mattress and let the mattress soak it in. Allow a 30 minute soaking time.
Step#5
Now slowly rinse the mattress and wash as normal. You can remove the excess water by pressing down on the mattress. You can even walk bare feet on the mattress to remove excess water.
Note: Never twist the mattress to dry it of water as this may damage the memory foam.
Step#6
If there are urine stains on your mattress then you will need to clean it using a teaspoon of borax. First sprinkle borax and then wash it as normal. You can even use a modern stain remover or bleach to clean the mattress.
Note: It is recommended not to use bleach or any bleach based products directly on the mattress. If you want to use bleach then make sure your mattress is covered.
Step#7
How to clean a memory foam mattress if there are large spots of urine or any other type of stain? Simple! All you need is some vinegar.
Mix vinegar to warm water in a 1:1 proportion. Now take a piece of clean cloth and wet it in the vinegar-water solution. Clean the stains and keep the mattress in the sunlight. The sun will help in dissipating the smell and also act as a cleaning agent.
Note: Memory foam is sensitive to sunlight. Hence it is recommended that you should allow limited exposure to the sun.
Tip: You can also clean memory foam mattress using essential oils. For example: you can mix a few drops of lavender, eucalyptus, or tea tree essential oil to vinegar to enhance deeper cleaning of memory foam mattress. This mixture will also have a deodorizing effect.
One of the important things to remember is that if you have any doubts regarding the process of cleaning then call on the professionals. Since memory foam is sensitive to certain products including hydrogen peroxide, you need to be extremely careful while defining the quantity to be used.
